Every Cloud: Perspectives is everything - Greg Sumner

My name is Greg Sumner and I am 30 years old. In 2012, I was a passenger in a car and became the only survivor of a crash that killed two people. Severely injured myself, I spent four months in a coma, my heart stopped completely multiple-times and when I woke up, I gradually came to realise that my injuries were life-changing. These words and the words in my book are my own, but I’m unable to write them myself because I’m unable to move from the neck down – the result of an acquired brain injury. I know many people have felt desperately sorry for me since the crash and they see “poor Greg” in a wheelchair. I need carers around the clock; I can’t do the everyday things that most people take for granted – dressing, feeding myself, but I want people to know that I am glad to be alive, and I am truly grateful to have been given a second chance at life. Since waking up, I have become a changed man. The old Greg was well-known to the police, my criminal record dated back to the age of just 14. By the age of 22, I was already on my third driving ban and I’d narrowly escaped a prison sentence a number of times. Now, as the new Greg, I visit locations such as schools, colleges, universities, and armed forces barracks where I tell my story and raise awareness of road safety issues. My ultimate goal is to help people to see that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I’m completely wheelchair bound, but I won’t let my capabilities dictate my lifestyle, I am father of 2 beautiful boys 1 before the crash and 1 since. I want to spread my story of positivity, even against immense uphill struggles, and it’s my hope that it may inspire others.
