4 of the best adventure books to inspire your first post-lockdown trip
Vacation dreaming? Here are some of the best adventure books to help you plan your post-lockdown trip
The end is in sight, or so Bo-Jo tells us, so I think it’s fair to say the time has come to plan some post-lockdown adventures. Let’s face it, this roadmap out of lockdown is definitely the journey we’ve been waiting for, but it’s not quite as exciting as backpacking the banana pancake trail. Books have been our only escape during these long months, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their transportive power. So, whilst we wait for restrictions to ease, here is a roundup of some of the best adventure books to inspire your post-lockdown plans.
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
Since staycations are more likely to be our first point of call, The Salt Path brings you to the British coast. This heart-wrenching memoir follows Raynor and her terminally ill husband Moth, as they walk the 630-mile South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, after having lost their home and livelihood. Celebrating the healing power of wilderness and nature, it’s sure to leave you yearning for a transformative trip along our British coast.
Bad Karma: The True Story of a Mexico Trip from Hell by Paul Wilson
A book where everything that can go wrong does go wrong on Paul’s dream surf trip to mainland Mexico. Set in the summer of 1978, Paul agrees to join two local icons on his dream trip, unaware their final destination lies in the heart of drug cartel country. After deciding to rob a supermarket in order to fund his trip, the story begins to unravel, and Paul’s bad karma turns the trip into a story of survival over surfing. Whilst Paul’s adventures might scare some travellers off, the story is an undeniably exciting read, and serves as sort-of survival guide if the worst were to happen.
Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan
Set in buzzing Hong Kong, Exciting Times follows 22-year-old Ava on her gap year as she navigates love, money and friendship. A light-hearted, easy read, that’s perfect for those who are still waiting to head out on their gap year travels. Fingers crossed that exciting Hong Kong removes their travel restrictions soon!
Cows Can’t Jump by Phil Bowne
A coming-of-age story set over a European adventure, Cows Can’t Jump follows 18-year-old Billy as he scrambles across Europe for a chance to be with the gorgeous and exciting Eva. Since lockdown has left many of us stunted in our search for love as well as travel, this book is sure to fill both gaps in your heart.
