Fogarty: The Strange Tale of Fogarty Maximus and Other Dragons

This December our Book of the Month is Chris Bulteel’s debut novel, Fogarty: The Strange Tale of Fogarty Maximus and Other Dragons. This story is wonderfully illustrated throughout by S. Kaye Watson and is perfect for readers who love adventure tales and dragons!

Synopsis

On one seemingly innocent day around the turn of the millennium, Sir Alisdair Maddy McGlynn, a poor Scottish Laird, decides to go fishing on his faithful boat, Kingfisher . Little does he know that one decision will change his life for good.

Caught in a massive storm off the north west coast of Scotland, Sir Maddy s boat is hit by both a tornado and a huge waterspout. Knocked out, he s transported on the top of the waterspout to a new land he soon learns is called Erehwon.

With his boat beyond repair, Sir Maddy starts to explore his new surroundings, little realising that he s being watched by hundreds of pairs of eyes. What he finds astounds him - more wealth than he could have dreamed of in the form of precious metals and stones. But the owners of the find might prove an even more amazing, and more dangerous, secret...

About the Author - Chris Bulteel

From school and college, Chris worked in catering management, charity work, local politics and social care, where he met people from all walks of life. He became Mayor of two towns and Sheriff of one. On retirement he continued his hobby of writing, becoming a published author. His new book, Fogarty, written with his grandchildren in mind contains hidden aspects of human behaviour as depicted in the world of dragons. Most of the characters are based on real people that he has met during his life. Fogarty, the strange tale of Fogarty Maximus and other dragons, shows that the trials of life can be overcome and that being different ism not a problem. The book is aimed at the older child and young adult.

About the Illustrator - S Kaye Watson

From a very early age, my illustrations were loosely based upon animation, cartoon strips and traditional children's book illustrators. Being self taught, my art was mainly as a hobby until working as a nurse, I found my mix of humorous observation and cute characterisation suited illustration for health promotion material. I was commissioned to produce booklets, posters, and educational leaflets which were published. One reviewer suggested my artwork was a mixture of Mabel Lucy Atwell and Giles. Rabbi Lionel Blue, in his preface for Caring For Confusion, by Paulette Micklewood, called my illustrations evocative.

A chronic back injury kept me housebound with restricted mobility for many years. It was during this time, I developed my skills, expanding art and crafts as personal therapy, printing, photography, graphic design and creative computing projects within the community in return for materials. As my confidence and abilities grew, my style evolved into its current form of eclectic, colourful, detailed, illustrative images which appeal to all ages.
