Publisher Spotlight: Red Dog Press
Are you a fan of crime, thriller, or mystery novels? Maybe you're a lover of all things noir. Perhaps the edgier the story, the better. Or maybe you’d prefer your whodunnits in a more cosy setting. Fortunately, there is a publisher who covers all of the above, and more.
Red Dog Press was founded by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Patricia Loofbourrow, who has written an array of crime, psychological thriller, sci-fi, and horror novels. Most notable is her epic steampunk saga, The Red Dog Conspiracies, (currently at seven volumes and with three additional prequels). Her independent press, Red Dog Press, champions a host of authors who write dark noir, thriller, and cosy mystery, bringing a variety of different styles to all things crime and suspense.
Red Dog Press encourages authors with new and interesting voices, who can create equally unique and three-dimensional characters to provide the crime genre with some new found zest. Writers who have found success under the publisher include Mathew Costello & Neil Richards, who collaborated on the bestselling Cherringham cosy mystery series, as well as breakthrough author of In Servitude, Heleen Kist, and romance and crime writer, Mel Gough.
Ongoing new releases from Red Dog Press have continued consistently into 2021, with more novels to come. The end of March saw the release of Dead in the Water by Chris McDonald, the second volume of his cosy crime series, The Stonebridge Mysteries, where the amateur purveyors of justice Adam Whyte and Colin McLaughlin investigate the supposed accidental death of a racing team captain.
March was also a good month for Curtis Ippolito, whose dark noir thriller, Burying The Newspaper Man, already received high praise prior to its release. The book tells the story of Macus Kemp, a San Diego beat cop who is forced to question his own ethics after finding the body of a man who Kemp has a disturbing personal history with.
The overall list of authors is highly impressive and appears to be expanding. For this reason, the fictional stomping-ground of characters and storytelling under Red Dog Press is indeed very rich. Themes of obsession, justice, revenge, fear and comedy are commonplace, and are depicted through the eyes of a host of 3 dimensional characters, largely driven by their morals, their demons, and their desire for resolution. From the bleak tortuous quests of ex- SAS Solider, John, in John Bowie’s Black Viking novels, to the humorous antics of J.D. Whitelaw’s Parker Sisters, the antagonists in Red Dog Press are created implicitly to provide audiences with an unforgettable reading experience.
Those hoping to contribute their own works to Red Dog Press, may be also pleased to know that they are open to submissions (with an understandably slower turnaround, due to challenges faced during the pandemic), and in turn offer editing, proofreading, publicity, and fair royalties to writers with successful submissions.
With their catalogue of novels expanding, Red Dog Press serves as a strong example of compelling literature built within a community of writers who are passionate about supporting each other, and the industry as whole.
Fans of Red Dog Press publications and Patricia Loofbourrow can expect Loofbourrow’s own new novel, Two of Hearts (Volume 7 of The Red Dog Conspiracies) to be released October 2021. Red Dog Press showcases the genre in extremely stylish fashion, and it will be exciting to see what they unveil next.
